The most common frustration we hear from solo international golfers visiting Japan is not about booking, not about language, and not about the dress code. It is this: they cannot find someone to play with.
Most Japanese golf courses require a minimum of two players to confirm a tee time. A few require four. Walking up as a single and hoping to join a group — the norm at many courses in the US, UK, or Australia — simply does not work here. Courses are pre-booked in full, groups are set, and there is no singles matching system at the counter. If you arrive alone, you may not play at all.
This is the gap we have spent the past several months building a solution for. Today, we are launching Teelink Pair.
What Teelink Pair Is
Teelink Pair is a solo golfer matching service for international visitors to Japan. The concept is simple: you register your trip details, preferred dates, area, and handicap. We find another golfer — or a small group — whose preferences align with yours. We introduce you. You play.
No algorithm. No automated email. A human review of each submission, a careful match, and a personal introduction. We built it this way deliberately, because playing with a stranger at a Japanese golf course is a real social experience — the lunch break alone is forty-five minutes — and that experience deserves more than a database query.
How the Matching Works
There are two sides to Teelink Pair, and both are open right now.
Option 1: Join a Listed Round
Golfers who already have a tee time at a specific course on a specific date can list their round and open it to a solo partner. If you have booked two tee times for a Tuesday in Hakone and your travel companion has cancelled, you can register the open slot. We will find someone whose handicap and play style match yours and introduce you before the round.
Option 2: Register as a Solo Seeking a Match
If you are traveling to Japan without a playing partner, you can register your full trip details: which region, which dates are flexible, what kind of courses you prefer, your handicap. We maintain a growing list of registered solo golfers and actively work to create pairings. When a strong match exists, we reach out to both parties and handle the introduction.
There is no fee for registration. Teelink Pair is free to use for both sides during the launch period.
Who This Is For
We designed Teelink Pair with a specific kind of golfer in mind. You are traveling to Japan alone — for business, on a solo trip, or because your regular playing partners could not make the dates work. You take the game seriously. You have a real handicap, you understand golf etiquette, and you are comfortable playing with someone you have not met before. You want a proper round at a proper course, not a managed group tour.
Teelink Pair is not a matchmaking service for beginners looking to learn the game in Japan. It is for experienced players who want to play well, with someone of similar ability, on courses that reward that ability.
Why We Built This Now
The honest answer is that we kept seeing the same pattern. A guest would book a course through us — Kawana, Hakone Kogen, one of the Taiheiyo clubs — and then a week before the trip, ask if we knew anyone they could play with. We would try to connect people informally, over email, and it worked often enough that we realized it deserved a proper structure.
Japan's golf season has also expanded. International visitor arrivals are at record levels. Golfers who might once have visited only in spring for the cherry blossoms are now coming year-round — summer in Hokkaido, autumn foliage rounds in Nikko and Kyoto, mild winter golf in Okinawa. More golfers, traveling alone, needing partners.
The timing felt right. The need is real. We built it.
How to Register
Teelink Pair is live at teelinkjapan.com/pair. The registration form takes about two minutes to complete. You will receive a confirmation email from us within 24 hours, and a matching introduction — when one is ready — within seven days of your registered travel window.
If you have a specific course already in mind, mention it in the message field. If you are flexible on location and just want a well-matched game somewhere in Japan, tell us that too. The more context you give us, the better the match.
Solo trips to Japan should not mean solo rounds. Register your details and we will find your match.

Teelink Pair is launching in beta. We are deliberately keeping the volume manageable in the first few months — we would rather make ten excellent matches than rush a hundred mediocre ones. As the system matures and we understand better what makes a great pairing, we will expand.
