Golf in Okinawa means something the mainland cannot offer: fairways with the East China Sea on the horizon, warm air year-round, and a post-round culture that is distinctly Ryukyuan — neither Japanese nor anything else. The food is different, the pace is slower, and the day follows its own logic. This is how to build that day.

From Naha (those based in central Okinawa): approximately 60–70 minutes by car north on the Okinawa Expressway to Onnason (恩納村). Rental car is strongly recommended in Okinawa — public transport to most golf courses is impractical. The drive north is scenic; the Expressway ends partway, and National Route 58 along the coast takes you the rest of the way.

Kariyushi Golf Resort is set on Onnason's hillside above the East China Sea. The course has ocean views from multiple holes — on clear days, the water is visible as an unbroken turquoise line beyond the fairways. 18 holes, par 72. The course is well-maintained, cart-mandatory, and caddie optional. The surrounding resort includes a hotel if you wish to stay overnight.

Clubhouse — Okinawa Soba or Taco Rice

The resort clubhouse serves Okinawan-inflected lunches alongside standard Japanese sets. Order Okinawa soba (ソーキそば) if it appears on the menu — thick wheat noodles in a pork-and-bonito broth topped with slow-braised ribs (sooki). Taco rice, Okinawa's own invention (taco filling over Japanese rice), is also often available and worth trying at least once. Budget ¥900–¥1,500.

Cape Manzamo (万座毛)

Five minutes south of Kariyushi by car, Cape Manzamo is a flat limestone promontory jutting over the East China Sea — the cliff edge forms an elephant-head silhouette that appears on half the postcards in Okinawa. The observation walk takes 20–30 minutes and requires no exertion. The colour of the water directly below is extraordinary: turquoise shallow reef, then deep blue beyond. Best in mid-afternoon light. The visitor centre (opened 2021) has clean facilities.

American Village (アメリカンビレッジ), Chatan

30 minutes south of Manzamo. Chatan's American Village is Okinawa's most unusual shopping area — built on reclaimed land that was formerly part of a U.S. military base, it has a retro-American aesthetic that exists nowhere else in Japan: neon signs, diners, arcade games, and sunset views over the sea. The ferris wheel near the beach is a landmark. A good place to wander for an hour before the drive to Naha.

From Chatan to Naha central: approximately 25–30 minutes. Return rental car if picking up from the airport; or park near Kokusai-dori if driving a hotel car. The Kokusai-dori shopping street and the Makishi Public Market are a 10-minute walk from most central Naha hotels.

Yunangi (ゆうなんぎい) — Naha

Yunangi is one of Naha's most beloved traditional Okinawan restaurants — a wood-interior dining room with low tables, Ryukyuan folk music on some evenings, and a menu that covers the canon: goya champuru (bitter melon stir-fry), rafute (braised pork belly in awamori sake), mimiga (pig-ear salad with sesame vinegar), Okinawa soba, and Orion draft beer. It is not the most refined restaurant in Naha, but it is the most genuine. Reservations are recommended for groups; walk-ins usually accepted for pairs. Budget ¥2,500–¥4,000 with drinks.

Kokusai-dori or Hotel

Kokusai-dori (国際通り, International Street) is Naha's main strip — souvenir shops, bars, live music from some izakaya, and the Makishi public market. The covered arcades (Heiwa-dori, Mutsumi-dori) branch off it and are quieter. Or simply return to the hotel — golf, a cliff walk, American Village, and a long dinner is enough for any day.

Kariyushi Golf Resort sits above the East China Sea on Onnason's western hillside, one of the stretches of coast most associated with Okinawa resort tourism. The course makes full use of the elevation — several holes have unobstructed sea views, and the fairways are wide enough to be forgiving while still rewarding accuracy. The resort hotel on site accommodates those who want to stay overnight. Green fees range from approximately ¥14,000 on weekdays to ¥20,000+ on weekends in peak season (October–March in Okinawa, when mainland visitors arrive for warmth). Cape Manzamo (万座毛)

万座毛 translates roughly as "a field where ten thousand people can sit" — the limestone plateau is indeed wide and flat above the sea cliff. The elephant-shaped rock formation at the cliff edge is Okinawa's most reproduced image. The renovated visitor centre (2021) has English signage, a cafe, and clean facilities. The walk along the cliff is fully paved and accessible. On clear days — most of the year in Okinawa — the water colour below the cliff is the most vivid in Japan: shallow turquoise reef fading to deep blue beyond. The Dinner

Yunangi (ゆうなんぎい)

Yunangi has been cooking traditional Okinawan food in the Tsuboya pottery district of Naha for decades. The menu is a thorough tour of Ryukyuan cuisine: goya champuru is the signature (bitter melon, pork, egg, and tofu — more balanced than it sounds), rafute is braised pork belly slow-cooked in awamori and soy (richly sweet and impossibly tender), and the house Okinawa soba is a proper bowl. Orion beer is the local draft. An English menu is usually available on request. The atmosphere is relaxed and local — no performance, no gimmick. Yunangi is what Okinawan home cooking tastes like when it is done well.

Practical Notes

Getting around Okinawa: A rental car is almost essential outside of Naha. International driving licences (IDP based on Japan's 1949 Geneva Convention) are accepted; the drive on the left is manageable after a brief adjustment. Most rental agencies at Naha Airport have English-speaking staff.

Best season: October to April is peak season for mainland Japanese visitors — warm, mostly dry, and ideal for golf. May and June bring the rainy season. July and August are hot and humid but courses stay open. Typhoon risk is highest August–September.

Yunangi is closed Sundays — if your trip falls on a Sunday, Makishi Ichiba (Naha's covered market) has several restaurants on the upper floor serving Okinawan dishes until late.

Where to Stay in Okinawa

What to Pack for Okinawa Golf

Okinawa's subtropical sun is intense — especially on ocean-facing fairways at Kariyushi. Reef-safe sunscreen SPF 50 protects both you and the coral — Okinawa's waters are world-class and many visitors snorkel after golf. Lightweight UV protection golf gloves are common among local players and worth carrying from May through October.
