Okinawa Golf: Tropical Fairways and Ocean Views

Okinawa is Japan's surprise — a subtropical archipelago of 160 islands stretching south toward Taiwan, with a culture, language, and culinary tradition distinct from the Japanese mainland. For golfers, Okinawa offers something no other part of Japan can match: true year-round play in genuinely tropical conditions, with ocean views that rival the finest resort golf in Hawaii or the Caribbean. When the rest of Japan is shivering through January, Okinawa is playing golf in 22°C sunshine.

This is Okinawa's defining advantage as a golf destination: there is no bad season (typhoons aside), no frost delays, no cold mornings requiring thermal layers, and no seasonal closures. If you can get on a plane, you can play golf.

What Makes Okinawa Golf Unique

Featured Courses

The Southern Links Golf Club (ザ・サザンリンクスゴルフクラブ)

The Southern Links Golf Club (ザ・サザンリンクスゴルフクラブ) is Okinawa's most distinctive and celebrated golf experience — a links-style layout on the southern tip of the main island that genuinely earns its name. The course plays along dramatic coral cliffs above the Pacific Ocean, with ocean views from the majority of holes and the kind of wind-influenced, target golf that the finest Scottish links courses inspire. The setting is extraordinary: turquoise water visible from the fairway, salt air, and the occasional tropical shower passing through. The turf responds beautifully to the coral-limestone drainage below, staying firm and playable through the island's frequent rainfall. The Southern Links is the course that most surprises mainland Japanese golfers visiting Okinawa for the first time — nothing else in Japan looks or plays quite like it. Okinawa Kariyushi Club

A resort-integrated course in the central part of the main island, Okinawa Kariyushi Club combines accessible golf with the broader Kariyushi resort complex including hotel facilities. The course is playable for all handicap levels and is particularly popular with domestic tourists visiting Okinawa for the first time. The clubhouse food takes obvious pride in Okinawan ingredients. When to Visit: Avoiding Typhoon Season

Okinawa's one significant weather consideration is typhoon season, which runs officially from June through October, with peak activity in August and September. Typhoons that directly strike Okinawa can close courses for 24–48 hours and make travel to/from the island temporarily disrupted.

The best months to visit Okinawa for golf are:

Winter Golf Tip: For mainland Japan golfers and international visitors visiting in December through February, Okinawa offers the finest winter golf in Japan — warm, sunny, and uncrowded. Flying from Tokyo Haneda to Naha takes approximately 2 hours 40 minutes, and the contrast with mainland winter is immediate and dramatic.

Okinawan Food Culture

Okinawan food is unlike anything else in Japan — influenced by its Ryukyu Kingdom history, its Chinese trade connections, and American military culture post-WWII. The golf course shokudo experience in Okinawa reflects this distinctive culinary heritage:

Island Hopping Golf

The Okinawa archipelago extends south of the main island to include the Miyako Island group and Yaeyama Islands group, both of which offer golf courses in extraordinary tropical settings:

Island hopping between the main island and the outer islands is a genuinely adventurous way to experience Okinawa golf — each island has its own distinct character, its own local food specialties, and its own memorable setting for a round.

Getting to Okinawa

Naha Airport on the main island is the gateway to Okinawa. Direct flights from Tokyo Haneda and Narita take approximately 2 hours 40 minutes and run frequently throughout the day on JAL, ANA, and Peach Aviation (budget carrier). Advance-booked fares start from approximately ¥10,000 one way. International flights connect Naha directly with Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, and several other Asian cities, making Okinawa accessible as an add-on to a broader Asia golf trip.
