Golf in Kyoto: Tradition and Tranquility on the Fairway

Kyoto is Japan's cultural and spiritual heart — a city of ancient temples, traditional machiya townhouses, geisha districts and imperial gardens. It is not, primarily, a golf city. But for the travelling golfer spending several days in the Kansai region, weaving a round of golf into the Kyoto itinerary is not only possible but deeply rewarding. The courses accessible from Kyoto have their own quiet, contemplative character that mirrors the city itself — and the combination of early-morning golf followed by afternoon temple-hopping is one of the finest ways to experience Japan's ancient capital.

This guide tells you where to play, how to get there from central Kyoto, and how to build the ideal Kyoto itinerary for a visitor who loves golf as much as culture.

Kyoto's Golf Context

Kyoto Prefecture itself has relatively few golf courses — the mountainous, temple-dense landscape of the city and its immediate surroundings leaves limited room for large sports facilities. The golf accessible from Kyoto draws primarily from three neighbouring areas: the shores of Lake Biwa (Biwako) in Shiga Prefecture to the east, the Kobe and Hyogo Prefecture area to the west, and Osaka Prefecture to the south. Each offers a different character and requires a different travel approach.

The good news is that Japan's exceptional rail network makes all three areas accessible from Kyoto Station within 30–60 minutes, and hire cars can reach most courses within 45–70 minutes of central Kyoto.

Courses Accessible From Kyoto

Biwako Golf Course — Shiga Prefecture

Biwako Golf Course sits on the gentle hills above Japan's largest lake, Lake Biwa, with panoramic views across the water on clear days. The course is a classic parkland layout with mature zelkova and maple trees lining the fairways, particularly beautiful in autumn when the foliage turns to crimson and gold. It is approximately 40 minutes from Kyoto Station by JR Biwako Line to Kusatsu, then taxi. The course is well-maintained and welcomes visiting golfers. Green fees: ¥12,000–¥20,000 weekday. Rokko Country Club — Hyogo Prefecture

One of the most prestigious courses in the Kansai region, Rokko Country Club sits in the Rokko mountain range above Kobe and offers a genuinely demanding mountain golf experience. The course has hosted multiple Japan Golf Tour events and is considered one of western Japan's finest layouts. Views from the upper holes span across Osaka Bay on clear days — a breathtaking setting. Access from Kyoto requires approximately 60–75 minutes by car or Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe and taxi. Green fees for visitors through concierge arrangement: ¥25,000–¥40,000. Osaka Area Courses

Osaka is 15 minutes from Kyoto by Shinkansen and the Osaka metropolitan area's golf courses are fully accessible for a day trip from Kyoto. The courses in Osaka's surrounding prefectures — Hyogo, Nara, and Shiga — offer a wide range from affordable daily-fee courses at ¥8,000–¥12,000 to premium private clubs. Using Kyoto as your base and making a day trip to an Osaka-area course is a practical and popular choice for visitors spending multiple nights in Kyoto.

The Kyoto Golfer's Day Structure

The key to a successful Kyoto golf day is early timing. Kyoto's most famous sights — Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama bamboo grove, Kinkaku-ji — are most beautiful and least crowded in the early morning, which conflicts with golf. The solution is to choose one or the other for the morning, and leave the second for afternoon.

A recommended structure for combining golf with Kyoto sightseeing:

The 9-Hole Lunch at Kyoto-Area Courses

Kansai cooking — the culinary tradition of Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara — is considered the most refined in Japan, and this ethos influences even the halfway lunch at golf courses in the region. Kyoto-area golf course restaurants often offer dishes reflecting local cuisine:

Lunch at Kyoto-area courses costs ¥1,800–¥3,500. The quality is consistently higher than comparable price points in Tokyo, reflecting the Kansai region's deep food culture.

Best Seasons for Kyoto Golf

Spring and autumn are both magnificent in Kyoto — and they're also the best seasons for golf in the region.

Spring (Late March to May)

Cherry blossoms transform Kyoto into one of the world's most beautiful places for two to three weeks in late March and early April. Playing golf during sakura season — with cherry trees in full bloom visible from the fairway or around the clubhouse — is a profoundly Japanese experience. Temperatures are ideal (14–22°C), fairways are firm and fast after winter, and the days are long enough for unhurried rounds. The only caution is Golden Week (late April to early May): Kyoto becomes extremely crowded with domestic tourists, accommodation prices spike, and golf courses charge premium rates.

Autumn (October to November)

Arguably Kyoto's finest season in every respect. The city's maple trees turn to crimson and orange, the air is clear and crisp, temperatures are ideal for both sightseeing and sport (15–23°C), and the light on the mountains in late afternoon is extraordinary. Golf course conditions are at their annual peak — firm, fast fairways and greens recovering from the summer's wear. Book well in advance: October and November in Kyoto are the most congested travel months of the year.

Autumn Booking Note: Popular ryokan, hotels, and golf tee times during October and November in the Kyoto-Kansai region book out months in advance. If your travel includes this period, arrange golf and accommodation at least 2–3 months ahead of your visit.

A Recommended Kyoto Golf Itinerary (4 Days)

Practical Note: Most Kyoto-area courses do not have English-language booking systems. A bilingual concierge service is strongly recommended to secure your preferred course, arrange the hire car from your hotel, and brief you on course-specific etiquette. Some of the finest courses in the Kansai region are effectively inaccessible to independent foreign visitors without an introduction.
