Kobe Golf Club — Japan's Oldest Course (1903)

Founded in 1903 by Arthur Hesketh Groom, a British merchant living in Kobe. This 9-hole course on the slopes of Mount Rokko is Japan's first golf course, and the atmosphere — narrow fairways between pine trees, views over Kobe and Osaka Bay on clear days — is unlike anything else in the country. Play 18 holes by going around twice. No motorised carts; caddies carry bags on foot as they have for over a century.

The cable car descent takes 10 minutes and is itself a memorable experience — the mountain falls away steeply below you. From Rokko-shita station, take the Hankyu Kobe Line toward Kyoto (about 45 minutes to Kyoto Station).

Arashiyama — Bamboo Grove & Togetsukyo Bridge

From Kyoto Station, take the San-in Line to Saga-Arashiyama (17 minutes). The bamboo grove behind Tenryu-ji temple is a 5-minute walk from the station. The light through the bamboo canopy is extraordinary in the late afternoon. Walk from the grove down to the Togetsukyo Bridge over the Oi River for the best view of the mountains behind. The temple garden (Tenryu-ji, World Heritage) is worth entering — ¥500 for the garden alone.

Hanamikoji-dori in Gion is Kyoto's most photographed lane — preserved wooden ochaya (teahouses), stone lanterns, and the occasional movement of a maiko between appointments. 20 minutes is enough to walk its length. Evenings are quieter than afternoons.

Kikunoi's Roan branch (the sister to the Michelin-starred main Kikunoi) serves kaiseki in a more accessible setting — still exceptional, still seasonal, but without requiring weeks of advance planning. Each course is built around the season's best ingredients: Kyoto vegetables, tofu, fresh fish, wagyu. Expect 8–10 courses over two hours. Taxi from Gion to most Kyoto hotels is ¥800–¥1,500 (10–20 minutes). If staying in Osaka, the Keihan Line from Gion-Shijo station reaches Osaka in 35 minutes.

The Course

Kobe Golf Club (神戸ゴルフ倶楽部)

The oldest golf course in Japan, and one of the oldest in Asia. Arthur Hesketh Groom laid out the original 9 holes on the upper slopes of Mount Rokko to give Kobe's foreign merchant community a place to play. The course has been maintained in remarkably original condition — the layout, the clubhouse, and the character remain unchanged. Visitors are welcome with a reservation. The caddie tradition is preserved; bags are carried on foot, no carts. Green fees are modest relative to the historical significance. The Afternoon

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove & Tenryu-ji

The bamboo grove behind Tenryu-ji is a 500-metre path through dense, towering bamboo. It is genuinely impressive in person — the scale and the sound (bamboo clicking in the wind) are difficult to reproduce in photographs. The adjacent Tenryu-ji garden is a National Special Historic Site and one of Kyoto's finest Zen gardens, designed in the 14th century. The Togetsukyo Bridge at the river is the best vantage point for Arashiyama mountain in autumn foliage season (mid-November).

Kikunoi Roan (菊乃井露庵)

Kikunoi is one of Kyoto's most respected kaiseki establishments. The Roan branch in Shimokawara (near Kodai-ji temple) is the more approachable sibling to the main Kikunoi in Minami-Gion, which has held three Michelin stars for many years. Kaiseki is a multi-course Japanese dinner built around the season — in autumn, this means matsutake mushroom, seasonal river fish, persimmon, and yuzu. In spring, bamboo shoots and cherry blossom motifs. Dishes are served in lacquerware and ceramics that are themselves works of craft. An English menu is available. Practical Notes

Access to Kobe Golf Club: The Rokko Cable Car stops for maintenance periods (usually February). Confirm dates with the cable car operator before planning. A direct taxi from central Kobe skips the cable car entirely.

Kikunoi reservation: Book at least 2–3 weeks in advance for weekend dinner, 1 week for weeknight. Teelink handles this in Japanese for Silver and Gold plan clients.

Arashiyama timing: Arrive after 15:00 to avoid the midday tour groups. The bamboo grove is open at all hours — the very early morning is the quietest, but late afternoon is more practical after a morning of golf.

Where to Stay in Kyoto or Kobe

This itinerary works from a base in either Kyoto or Kobe — Arashiyama is best reached from Kyoto, while Kobe Golf Club sits closer to central Kobe. A Kyoto base lets you end the day in Gion and return to your hotel by foot. Kobe offers excellent access to the Rokko ropeway and a more compact city feel.
